Shiau–Fan is designed to reduce worm artifacts in mid-tone-heavy images by using a different error distribution than Floyd–Steinberg. It keeps the grain balanced and more random-looking, so it is a solid choice for portraits, fur, and images with lots of gradual shading where directional streaks would be distracting. Use it at 254–300 DPI when you notice worms with Floyd–Steinberg on the same image.
