Shiau–Fan is designed to reduce worm artifacts in mid-tone-heavy images by using a different error distribution than Floyd–Steinberg. It keeps the grain balanced and more random-looking, so it is a solid choice for portraits, fur, and images with lots of gradual shading where directional streaks would be distracting. Use it at 254 × 300 DPI when you notice worms with Floyd–Steinberg on the same image.
